About the event
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: On the morning of January 17, 1994, LA residents were shaken awake by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake centered in Northridge. It broke freeways, incited hundreds of fires, killed dozens of people, injured thousands, and caused $20 billion in damage costs, plus more than $40 billion in economic losses. LA would never be the same. Seismologist Julian Lozos will explain the fascinating science behind the event that became the costliest U.S. earthquake on record.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Julian Lozos is a seismologist and associate professor of Geophysics at California State University, Northridge. He uses computer-generated earthquake models to study which initial conditions produce which specific earthquake effects. Lozos is also active in earthquake outreach, giving public talks in seismically active areas, and he serves on the communications committee for the Seismological Society of America.
