About the event

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Magic mirrors hold a storied place in mythology and folklore, acting as doorways to mystical realms, enchanted devices for seeing the unseen, and icons representing veracity and delusion. They seem to transcend their ordinary reflective purpose, serving as mediums for divination, peepholes into the innermost self, and grand facilitators for illusion. Mythologist John Bucher will tell stories of mystic mirrors ranging from the Japanese legend of Yata no Kagami, a sacred mirror representing wisdom and honesty, to the smoking mirror of the Aztec god, Tezcatlipoca, who used his obsidian mirror as a tool of prophecy.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: John Bucher is a mythologist and storyteller that serves as Executive Director for the Joseph Campbell Foundation. He has worked with government and cultural leaders around the world as well as organizations such as HBO, Paramount Pictures, DC Comics, The History Channel, Nickelodeon, A24 Films, and Atlas Obscura. He has served as a producer, consultant, and writer for numerous film, television, and Virtual Reality projects. He is the author of six books including the best-seller, The Storytelling Almanac. John has worked with magicians, escape room designers, New York Times Best Selling authors, YouTube influencers, Eisner winners, Emmy winners, Academy Award nominees, and cast members from Saturday Night Live. He holds a PhD in Mythology & Depth Psychology and has spoken on 6 continents about using the power of myth and story to reframe how individuals, organizations, cultures, and nations believe and behave.
