About the event

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Jenny He and Dara Jaffe, co-curators of John Waters: Pope of Trash, will discuss the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the artist’s contributions to cinema. On view at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures through August 4, 2024, the exhibition explores Waters’s process, themes, and unmatched moviemaking style. Works on view include costumes, props, set decoration, handwritten scripts, correspondence, scrapbooks, posters, photographs, moving-image material, and more.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: Jenny He is Exhibitions Curator at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the co-curator of John Waters: Pope of Trash, alongside Dara Jaffe. In addition to John Waters, she has curated exhibitions on Pedro Almodóvar, Hildur Guðnadóttir, animation filmmakers, special and visual effects artists, and numerous other subjects for the museum. Previously, she independently curated and toured The World of Tim Burton to multiple worldwide institutions, including the Museum of Image and Sound, in São Paulo, the Max Ernst Museum, in Bruhl, Germany, and the Mori Arts Center, in Tokyo, after co-curating the retrospective exhibition Tim Burton at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For MoMA, among other exhibitions, Jenny has curated retrospectives on Kathryn Bigelow, Lillian Gish, and the Coen Brothers.

Dara Jaffe is a film historian and Associate Curator at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. In her ten years with the museum, Dara has curated galleries dedicated to Casablanca, Spike Lee, The Wizard of Oz, Oscar Micheaux, and Citizen Kane, as well as the vital crafts of acting, casting, makeup and hairstyling, and animation.  Most recently, she co-curated the exhibition John Waters: Pope of Trash alongside Jenny He and is currently working on the upcoming exhibition Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital. Dara holds an MA in film studies from Wesleyan University and is also a visual artist whose liquid light projections have been featured at historic Los Angeles venues such as the Troubadour, El Rey Theater and the LA Pride Parade & Festival.
