About the event
ABOUT THE BOOK: Regretting that he never knew his father well, Peter Clothier seeks to close that emotional gap in this collection of letters written to the Anglican minister thirty years after his death, Dear Harry: Letters to My Father. The letters share his loss of Christian faith, the lived experience of love, sex and marriage, and the inevitability of illness, aging and death. What starts out as a call for recognition becomes a belated love story between father and son.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Brought up in a small English village in World War II, Peter Clothier experienced a privileged education at boarding school and Cambridge University before coming to the United States in 1964. After four years as a poet and translator at the famed University of Iowa Writers Workshop and a doctorate in Comparative Literature, he came to Southern California in 1968 to teach at USC and served as Dean at Otis Art Institute and Loyola Marymount University before leaving academia more than 30 years ago to follow his vocation as a writer. Known professionally as an art writer and the author of a monograph on the British artist David Hockney, he is also the author of a number of books, including poetry, novels and several essay collections.
