Casablanca: The Making of Movies' Greatest Love Story

ABOUT THE  PRESENTATION: Eighty years after its release, Casablanca has become the world’s favorite cinematic love story. Behind the movie's dramatic events is a true story filled with its own danger, passion, heartbreak and triumph. Join us as award-winning producer and author Steven C. Smith reveals the real-life origins of Rick’s Café, and a true smuggling mission that spawned the story; shares surprising facts about the movie’s makers, many of whom were refugees who related to its story of escaping fascist control; and tells the fascinating backstory of the song “As Time Goes By."

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Steven C. Smith is a four-time Emmy-nominated producer and the author of two award-winning biographies, of composers Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner. Steven's over-200 documentaries for television include collaborations with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Julie Andrews, Sidney Poitier and Stephen Sondheim.

ABOUT THE CLUB: Founded in 1925, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club still thrives with food, friendship, and fun. Our meetings are held in our clubhouse, Friendship Auditorium, located at 3201 Riverside Drive, near the corner of Los Feliz Boulevard, in Griffith Park. Best described as a variety show, attendees enjoy a catered breakfast, silly songs, club traditions, and an interesting presentation from a guest speaker.
