ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Merle Porter (1907–1988) was a one-man postcard production company, based out of Colton, California. He produced and distributed millions of cards over a 50-year career. Nearly always about places, his cards celebrated ordinary landscapes, including highways and small town downtowns in the western states—especially California.
The Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), a research organization interested in understanding and exploring the built landscape of the USA, has been collecting (and distributing) postcards made by Merle Porter since the late 1990s.
CLUI program director Aurora Tang will share a selection of Porter’s California postcards, alongside contemporary re-photography of the depicted scenes, taken by the CLUI. Comparing these old postcard views with current views of the same location…
